Christine Land on her copy of 1737 Baroque Cello Piccolo by Johann Georg Reicher
What an inspiring and humbling experience to commission the creation of a cello!
I especially valued being involved from the start in choosing the wood for the instrument and later deciding together the finer detail for the peg design and wood, fingerboard and the tailpiece embellishments, as well as the colour of the varnish, which I wanted to match the original as much as possible
It was fascinating and invaluable to receive the almost weekly set of photos, following the progress of the build. Glyn’s craftsmanship is absolutely superb, and I have trusted him with various involved projects on my other instruments over the last 10 years.
I will never forget the shared emotional moment seeing the completed instrument and playing it. The set-up was spot on from the start, proved by the resonance and richness of the sound, which is continuing to develop.

This instrument was built by me after Christine visited my workshop in Wales with the original, and with the owners permission, we were able to measure, photograph and draw templates as required before she had to return home after the weekend. I felt it was important to not just replicate the exact physical shape and size of the original, but the tone and response too, being a rare, 5-string original instrument, this piccolo cello had an extraordinary depth to the low register which I was anxious to replicate.
Thankfully, after being played for a while now, the full voice is developing and that depth has been achieved.
